ICONIC 'FSC PURE' TIMBER DOORS MAKE THEIR UK DEBUT
Iconic Internal Doors is a new breed of eco-engineered, 100% ‘FSC Pure’ certified timber doors suitable for premium new build, commercial projects and self-build applications. Introduced by Messer’s Mumford and Wood, the former executive management team that were behind the successful timber windows brand, the launch of Iconic Internal Doors brings an extensive and luxurious collection of contemporary and traditional internal door designs to the UK construction industry.
“These doors have really captured our imagination,” says Chris Wood, Director, Iconic Internal Doors, “and even though we find ourselves launching in a difficult market, the time could not be better. It is time the market offered certified products - just badging them ‘from sustainable sources’ is not enough and is seen as dubious by industry professionals and environmental campaigners. Iconic doors are FSC certified as they are manufactured from 100% ‘pure’ timber which is arguably the premium rating. Buildings can now be FSC certified and with this, and CPET timber procurement (The Central Point of Expertise on Timber Procurement set up by DEFRA) initiatives, and an increasingly proactive green pound, you can be sure that the eco credentials of all building products will be more closely scrutinized.”
“Developers are looking for sustainable and stylish products that give wow appeal but remain affordable. With environmental conviction being front of mind, together with an exciting and beautiful product - at sensible prices for their quality - we know the market is waiting for Iconic Intelligent Doorsets. These doors are naturally beautiful and allow designers and builders to differentiate their scheme both aesthetically and environmentally.”
Where Iconic doors differ from many others is that their construction uses a single type of carefully selected Taeda timber. Iconic have sourced a product which is 100% FSC-certified material and therefore described as ‘pure’. “The alternative FSC mixed-sources classification does not meet our requirements,” says Chris. “Mixed sources allows for the use of non-certified material which, in my opinion, defeats the point of buying a certified product.” This ‘FSC Pure’ timber is subjected to an innovative finishing process which allows faithful matching to achieve a much-admired traditional solid hardwood appearance. Beautiful finishes include dark, lustrous Wenge, aged Oak, rich Cherry and intense Walnut.
“People choose hardwoods because they are perceived to have a better appearance and consequently carry a very high price,” says John Mumford, Director, “but our doors have the same luxurious appearance and are significantly more economical without compromising quality. Added to this we avoid the use of slow growing and increasingly rare hardwoods which require protection through government legislation and intelligent alternative sourcing of material.”
Iconic Intelligent Doorsets are an engineered wood product that uses solid timber sections glue-laminated together. This results in doors that have a superb appearance while offering enhanced durability, strength and stability. The 100% ’pure’ engineered timber generates the minimum of waste during the manufacturing process and does not have an inferior composite material core.
“These timber doors are a complex product with a highly engineered finish,” says John Mumford. “The wood is carefully selected for its high density and harder wearing quality which we combine with precise drying and cutting for optimum stability and grain appearance.” Iconic is amongst the first to offer internal doors certified to the 100% ‘FSC Pure’ standard.
“We specialise in just one type of timber to achieve the highest quality. The wood is specially selected and only material of a minimum age, being older than the industry standard by some 30% is used and only from selected parts of the logs. “The density is at least 10% higher than the material many other door manufacturers use and older logs result in less uncontrolled tensions, greater regularity and allows for far more precision drying processes,” continues John.
Iconic has been audited by BM TRADA and holds FSC Chain of Custody Certification for the UK element of the supply chain. This audit ensures that the products’ credentials meet the very highest standards of authenticity and that the company’s management and distribution systems are equally endorsed.
Style collections include the distinctive Milan in which vertical and horizontal lines are combined or used individually to frame the rich timber grain or add interest to a more subtle painted door and can be enhanced with satin or clear glazing.
Doors in the Paris collection have large, deep panels that allow a mixture of light and shade to develop across their surface providing mystery and intrigue, while the classical Venezia doors are inspired by the grand architecture of Venice. The designs are complex with individual profiled panels and ornate detailing. Montreal doors have wide horizontal lines that create a sense of breadth and tranquillity. The lines are imported using grooves, glass or distinctive metal inserts.
Traditional London styles have bold charm and character and are based upon authentic horizontal styles with traditional craftsman detailing of either ‘bead and butt’ or ‘bolection’ moulding. “These designs are normally commissioned pieces which make them extremely expensive and cost-prohibitive in the majority of projects. Iconic volume produced doorsets can achieve the appearance and aesthetics of these traditional styles while keeping a control on cost as well as control the impact we make on the environment,” comments John.
A fine finish is achieved after repeated furniture-standard sanding and both spray and hand application of superior polyurethane varnish achieves a hard and scratch resistant finish. A paint alternative in a range of translucent and solid colours is also available. The selected natural pine features unique grain patterns that can be laid in vertical and horizontal designs, according to the door style, providing a distinctive effect especially when combined with translucent finishes. A choice of sizes is available from stock and bespoke sizes can be made to order.
Speed of installation is exceptional reducing on-site labour considerably. All frame and architrave joints are accurately prepared to enable the linings to snap into place without mechanical fixing or unsightly pinholes. The Iconic knot free frames are rebated to accept the matching architrave as opposed to the traditional door-lining-and-stop that are assembled on-site. No site cutting is required for hinges, lock sets and handles reducing the risk of error and subsequent costly waste. The Iconic door frame is factory fitted with a soft performance seal that reduces closing noise and provides excellent sound and draft insulation. Premium quality designer hardware comes as standard in a choice of contemporary and traditional styles and finishes.
“And the result? We have a premium natural product that is great to look at and live with, environmentally sound right down to the care and consideration of the indigenous workforce, and smartly priced. FSC is the only wood certification scheme endorsed by the major environmental charities such as the WWF and Greenpeace! Even if these sound credentials are not enough the appearance of the product really allows interior designers to add colour, depth and interest to their project.”
